I recently began a study of charisms with a group of friends. The word charism might conjure ideas of winsome leaders, or maybe a room full of people with their hands raised high in praise and worship. Neither are what I am doing. Our study of charisms is basically an in-depth look at what gifts we have been given through our Baptism so that we might more readily bring Jesus into the world. These gifts aren’t for us but for others and when we are enacting them, we are exhilarated.
There are quite a few charisms and so much to learn but one has been sticking out to me in the midst of this season of preparation for Christmas, Helps. The gift of Helps is a charism that is focused on assisting a leader in achieving their goal and vision by addressing needs in the background. The helper rarely gets acknowledged and doesn’t really want it. They enjoy being part of the plan and doing the integral things that no one else tends to see and when they do, the fruit of their labor exceeds the average person.
And at this time of year thinking about Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I couldn’t help but wonder if Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father, had the gift of Helps. In the scriptures he doesn’t say a word but his actions are life changing for Jesus and Mary. He isn’t up in front waving everyone on but quietly making sure it is all getting done according to God’s plan.
This year we have been blessed by so many people who have taken care of the details so that we could continue to care for our family. You have been silent and just acted because you felt God prompting you, much like St. Joseph and so Maggie has something to say….
Thank you so much for all of you who pray and hope with us, who have given to us and our kids, and lightened the load. May you have the Lord’s blessing this Christmas. May you experience His infinite, unchanging love for you and live in His grace and mercy.
Merry Christmas from the Tejedas!
