Miracles Do Happen

She is working so hard on sitting up on her own!

A month since surgery and it seems that Maggie’s healing is wrapping up. I spoke with our doctor last night and he is extremely pleased with how her hand looks and it seems that we won’t have to bandage much longer. That being said, things weren’t always so easy going this last month.

A week after Maggie’s surgery her hard cast was removed and we received her soft cast. A week later we did our first at home bandage change and her fingers, although chubby and cute, were not healing as anticipated. With our doctor’s assurance that we could manage this at home we started doing bandage changes everyday, soaking her fingers and applying antibiotic ointment. I sent a late night prayer request to my friends and went to bed that night. The following day we geared up for bandage change and when we opened it up the graft spot that concerned us was looking better, but another spot had taken a turn for the worse. So we plowed ahead with bandage changes each day.

We would soak her hand, dry it off with a cool blow dryer, apply ointment, and Carlos would wrap her up again. After the first two days of bandage changes the older kids voiced that they were upset by Maggie’s cries. They each told us they were praying for Maggie. The eldest two, who can’t stand the sight of blood and/or their sister in pain, remained downstairs. Maggie’s big sister walked in on day three and announced, “Maggie, it’s okay! I will never leave you!” Big sister has been our mainstay during bandage changes and Maggie hasn’t cried since.

After 6 days of bandage changes the wounded area wasn’t improving but looking worse each day. Carlos turned to me confirming my own thoughts, “Take some pictures and send them to the doctor.” Within the hour our amazing surgeon wrote back explaining that Maggie’s graft didn’t take in that small portion but it would heal eventually.

Just to compare a bit, three weeks after surgery we should be close to getting her bandages off on that hand. This was discouraging to say the least. We were looking at a wound that could potentially need weeks of daily changes. I reached out to friends to intercede for Maggie and went to bed begging the Lord to speed up her healing.

The following day’s bandage change blew my mind. We opened the gauze wrap to see that a scab had formed. The wound that had been open and getting worse for a whole week now showed a definitive sign of healing. Carlos and I were dumbfounded, I still can’t believe it now. I immediately took pictures and sent them to the doctor and asked, “Am I making this up? Does this look a lot better?” He confirmed that her healing had turned the corner in one night.

Cue the laughter, the prayers of thanksgiving, and the tears of appreciation. That night I couldn’t help but sing in praise. Maggie loved it and joined in and when I stopped she would say, “Mo!”

Miracles are happening folks. I know that you and so many of your children pray for Maggie daily. Please share with them that the Lord who heals is still healing. Share with them that he hears their prayers and wants to keep hearing them and answering them. He loves all of his children so dearly, the big ones and little one.
